A Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

GreenFaith is a unique organization with a clear mission at a critical time: Inspiring people of all spiritual backgrounds and diverse religious traditions to deepen their relationship with nature and to take action for the earth.

GreenFaith’s partners are members of churches, synagogues, temples, and nature centers and environmental groups. We unite these often disconnected audiences – some traditionally religious, others spiritual seekers, still others environmentalists - in a dynamic partnership to offer a spiritual, values-based approach to stewarding creation.

Through education, sustainability consulting, and advocacy, GreenFaith is deepening people’s relationship with the earth and building an environmentally just and sustainable society. We offer practical solutions and a hopeful vision for an environmentally healthy future. Our accomplishments include:

  • Installing solar energy systems at two pilot sites while identifying 25 faith-based sites for installations in 2004-5.
  • Helping force the US Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a study of Newark Bay – one of the most polluted bodies of water in the US – and to create a clean-up plan to benefit the poor, minority residents of Bay communities.
  • Enrolling over 200 households as users of renewable energy, preventing over 350,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from entering earth’s atmosphere annually.
  • Developing our Water Conservation Kits enabling the average New Jersey household to conserve 50,000 gallons of water a year.
  • Testifying in support of the recently-passed “Clean Car” Bill forcing auto manufacturers to sell cars in New Jersey that meet tougher emissions standards.
  • Conducting detailed energy audits at 16 houses of worship which identified energy savings that will prevent over 280,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from entering earth’s atmosphere annually.
  • Speaking to over 5,000 persons annually about a moral, spiritual basis for environmental care.
  • Winning the US EPA 2004 Energy Star for Congregations National Award for our work on energy issues.

We invite you to join us, and to help create an environmentally healthy future.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Fletcher Harper
Executive Director
