Who are We?

PEQ, is an interfaith environmental coalition which seeks to educate, advocate and mobilize the New Jersey faith community on behalf of environmental stewardship and justice. PEQ is a registered not-for-profit 501(C) 3 corporation in New Jersey and is governed by a board of trustees. Representation from all religious groups is sought on the board of advisors, currently composed of persons from 14 religious denominations in New Jersey.

What is our History?

Founded following the 1992 UN Earth Summit and incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with an interfaith board, PEQ helps congregations address earth stewardship and environmental justice in their worship, education, outreach and facilities management.

In 1995, PEQ sponsored a major conference on environmental values at Drew University and has supported events such as United Nations "Environmental Sabbath" programs in various locations in New Jersey. PEQ has sponsored lead testing of children in Newark and has co-sponsored interfaith leadership training seminars in conjunction with the National Religious Partnership for the Environment (NRPE). Workshops have targeted religious leadership in New Jersey. Other programs have been presented by member organizations such as the United Jewish Federation of MetroWest, the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and the Presbytery of Elizabeth.

PEQ maintains on going dialogue with public officials and our members of Congress. This is an outgrowth of an interfaith mission to Washington D.C. in 1994 where, in dialogue with our members, we expressed our concern regarding the attempts to dismantle key environmental legislation.

PEQ has also been involved with the United Nations Environmental Programme in its' publication of Earth and Faith, A Book of Reflection for Action.

Since 1998, PEQ has held training sessions on Global Warming, Air Quality and Electricity Deregulation for members of the faith community. These sessions were an introduction to the Interfaith Energy Alliance Green Energy Program that began in September 2000.

Who are our Members?

PEQ members consist of a broad base of individuals and organizations throughout New Jersey of diverse spiritual and cultural traditions united in their concern for the environment and environmental justice.
